The Pathfinders are a family all year long, but those who make the journey together to Caswell each year find that our ties grow stronger there. This is an intergenerational trip in that many of our children still come and bring their children to be a part of the "family." We prepare and eat meals together, we read, play games, sing, knit, paint, fish, do puzzles, visit the forts and the PX . . . whatever we want. We tell stories, so many stories! We reminisce about those in our family who can no longer be there and how much they still mean to us. We laugh at the stories our kids tell about past youth trips that we, as parents, may have never heard before! We get the chance to sit and visit with people that we may only see briefly at church and to catch up with those who we sometimes only see at Caswell. We have a dessert "room" and certain favorites are expected to be there— pound cake with caramel icing, Mississippi Mud cake, coconut cake, oatmeal cake, chocolate peanut butter cookies, the "Mike Morris" brownies, and so many more. The houses we stay in there are just wooden structures, but to us they're made of gold because of the precious memories they hold for all of us. It's like you pass through the gate to enter Fort Caswell and you leave your cares and worries right there and don't think about them again until you pick them up on the way home. We've been so fortunate to have had this trip together since 1992, missing only one year due to Covid, and our hope is that we can continue this tradition for more years to come. |
