AUGUST MISSION PROJECT

For the month of August, the mission project focuses on the Shepherd's Table soup kitchen. Sam Carothers has been a long-time Friday volunteer with Shepherd's Table, and we're grateful for the opportunity to give back to our neighbors across the street.

The Soup Kitchen began in 1980 when six individuals who had seen citizens of our city begging for food and rummaging in trash cans were determined to address this situation. They prepared a meal of soup and sandwiches and served 27 hungry people on the first day. Today the kitchen, which is located in the basement of the Church of the Good Shepherd's education building, serves around 250 people each day, Monday through Friday.

The kitchen feeds all who enter the door with no questions asked and no charge for the meal. Guests have the opportunity for a good meal served in a place where they are greeted and welcomed. Not all of the guests are unhoused; many have shelter, but are unable to afford food in addition to rent and medications. The kitchen, like our clothing ministry, helps their guests stretch their limited income.

So, how can you help this month? Here's a list of regularly needed donation items:

• Old towels and wash cloths for drying pots and pans

• Liquid laundry detergent

• Large bottles of Dawn dish detergent

• Stainless steel pot scrubbers (not Brillo pads)

• Activity books and culturally varied story books

• Markers and crayons

• Small stuffed animals

Your donations may be placed in the marked drawer in the cabinet of the Lewis Lobby.

Thank you for your support!
