ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL RISE MEAL PACKAGING EVENT
With a common goal to help provide nutritious food for people who need it, 74 people of all ages came together in the First Baptist Church fellowship hall on Sunday to take part in the annual Rise Against Hunger meal-packaging event. Within about two hours,10,172 bags of nutritious food were packed, weighed, sealed, and loaded onto trucks. Once the group got into the swing of things, they packed 1,000 meals every 7 minutes! From there, the Rise Against Hunger representative said that whether by road, by sea, or even via mountain climbers, the food will be delivered as wholesome meals to those in need around the world.
Nancy Phillips, the event organizer, was there with her carefully planned volunteer layout on Sunday, and she did a great job making sure all tasks were delegated and the process ran smoothly. After a delicious lunch of pizza, salad, and cookies, attendees were assigned to their stations and proceeded to take part in an impactful event that volunteers said was an activity to make a difference as well as interact with other church members in a fun and enjoyable way.
FBC member Jane Weathers, a first-time volunteer assisting with this activity, said she decided to sign up to help after seeing the remembrances from the 9/11 terrorist attack on the news last week. She was watching the news as people were discussing the tragedy of the events that happened 25 years ago, and how volunteers made a big difference then and continue to make a big difference when they work together. "This is a simple way to help people by helping to provide food to people who need it,” Jane said.
Rebecca Sasser said she and her family have volunteered for the Rise Against Hunger event for several years, and have also volunteered at the Rise Against Hunger warehouse in Raleigh. When she volunteers, she thinks of all the kids she helps when she packs these meals. "I want children all over the world to have access to nutritious food," she said.
Volunteer Wyatt Yelverton said he has participated in the Rise Against Hunger event at FBC in the past, and he enjoys seeing volunteers come together every year. "I have helped out for a few years because it makes a difference and it's fun,” he said. - Will Woodson |
