Prayer Shawl Ministry

Prayer Concerns: Every day of the week, a different group of FBC members prays for a specific list of concerns which they receive by email or access by calling the church office and listening to a recorded message. The intercessors incorporate these prayer concerns into their personal prayers at whatever time of day or night they choose. To request a prayer concern or add your name to the list of intercessors, call the church office at (919) 832-4485, ext. 200 or e-mail the church office in the church office.

First Baptist Church of Raleigh started its Prayer Shawl Ministry in 2006. Our group has knitted or crocheted more than 200 shawls. They have been given to members as well as friends and relatives who are going through life changing/challenging happenings: cancer patients, others who are ill, those grieving the loss of a loved one, those experiencing divorce, someone suffering from a trauma as well as gifts of love, friendship and caring. Love of knitting has been combined into a prayerful ministry that reaches out to those in need of comfort and solace. Blessings are knitted into every shawl as people pray as they are creating hand-knitted and crocheted shawls for those in need. E-mail the church office and learn how to get involved!

Each shawl has a special story to tell:

“I was aware of the Prayer Shawl ministry but did not appreciate its importance until the minister showed up in my hospital room with one for me.”

“…Having discovered how meaningful these shawls are, I am convinced that all the prayer that went into mine was most assuredly the reason I recovered so quickly and so completely.”

“Please note that our family has been blessed with the beautiful art woven through the Prayer Shawl Ministry. Thank you for your support.”

The ministers as well as knitters deliver the shawls. The shawls are placed in white bags that have been decorated by children at First Baptist.

Included with each shawl is this message:

“This Prayer Shawl was made especially for you

with Love and Prayers, by members of the First Baptist Church of Raleigh.

May you discover Comfort and Solace as you wear it.

May it encircle you with God’s Love and Peace, now and always!”

“It has been with much joy that I have prayed for you while knitting this shawl.

May it be a continual reminder of our loving Heavenly Father’s care and comfort for you.”
