Our college Sunday school meets at 9:45 on Sunday mornings and begins with a light breakfast, such as doughnuts or biscuits. The group is low key and intimate, conversational and open. We seek to provide an atmosphere that encourages discussion among students and allows them to ask questions that are demanding, complex, or even unanswerable. By exploring the scripture in this kind of depth, we hope to create lessons that are intellectually and spiritually stimulating.
Our theme this fall is “This is Really in the Bible?” Rotating teachers will help us focus on different passages of scripture that have traditionally been overlooked, passages that are particularly confusing or bizarre, and passages with a message that seems counter intuitive. We’ll try to make sense of this scripture and figure out how they apply to our lives today while also examining their origins, context, and history of interpretation.
Worship at First Baptist takes place at 11:00 in our main sanctuary. We have a traditional worship service that all ages attend.
Transportation from Meredith College and NCSU is provided. A van will pick up from those campuses before Sunday school and return students to them after worship. If you need a ride from another campus, please let us know and we’ll do our best to work something out.
On the final Sunday of each month, lunch for college students is provided in someone’s home. On these Sundays, the van will return to Meredith and NCSU after lunch.
Our next scheduled college retreat is a Winter Retreat January 2-5, 2014 in Beech Mountain, NC. Weather permitting, we’ll enjoy hiking, sledding, or other outdoor activities. Some choose to ski as well, but the weekend is more than a ski trip, as we’ll also have discussions, sessions, and worship that help us reflect on our faiths. Cost is $40 (plus you’re on your own for skiing costs). Come join us and start 2014 off right!
We also plan to attend the CBF-NC Collegiate Retreat scheduled for February 1-2, 2014. For more details, check out the CBF-NC website HERE. If you’re interested in going with FBC Raleigh, contact Trey.
Each year, college students at First Baptist take a week-long mission trip. Past trips have included an urban ministry focus in New York City and disaster relief work following tornadoes in Birmingham, Alabama. This year’s mission trip is scheduled for March 8- 15 to El Carrizo, Honduras.
Our college students have often taken part in local workdays and service projects. Projects have included working through Habitat for Humanity, donating blood, working in First Baptist’s clothing ministry, and working through other CBF channels. We anticipate that 2013-2014 will be another year where FBC college students take part in projects such as these.
We like to eat! In recent semesters, we’ve met for a midweek lunch on Hillsborough Street every other week or so. We’ll see what everyone’s schedule looks like and try to find a day and time that will work for most people.
