Traditional/liturgical Baptist church in the heart of downtown Raleigh seeks a part-time Organist/Music Assistant to help plan and lead worship music and music education programs of the church. Responsibilities include providing music for 11 a.m. Sunday service; midweek rehearsal accompaniment; leadership of children’s, youth, or handbell choir; playing for seasonal services, including Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, Christmas Eve; and playing for special services, including weddings and funerals. All duties would be carried out under the supervision of and in collaboration with the Minister of Music. The position would require approximately 15-20 hours per week.
The Austin organ is regularly maintained and includes 43 ranks. A Schimmel grand piano is sometimes used for worship accompaniment.
Founded in 1812, First Baptist is affiliated with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and is committed to ministry and community outreach in an urban setting. The church observes the seasons of the Christian calendar and worship planning follows the Revised Common Lectionary.
A Bachelor of Music degree is required, and a master’s degree is preferred. The candidate must have superior keyboard proficiency, must be able to work collaboratively, and must be committed to ministry through music. The organist/music assistant may use the church facility for lessons and recitals of private students, if desired.
