INTRODUCING THE FACILITIES ASSESSMENT PROCESS

The facilities assessment process, guided by our ad hoc Facilities Assessment Committee is underway. As you may recall, this committee was formed in 2017 to examine the current uses and condition of the Lewis Building and to explore future needs and possibilities. Earlier this year, the Church Conference approved the committee’s recommendation that we engage the services of New City Design Group to help us with this process  and New City has begun this work, meeting with staff and other church leaders.

The work involves several different components. We need to have a more accurate sense of how we are currently using the building, each and every room, day and night, and seven days a week. This requires a more systematic analysis than we can obtain through selective experience. Then, we need to have a thorough assessment of the building itself, how frequently each space is currently being used, and the condition of its mechanical systems. Finally, once we have this information, we can begin to connect the realities of this physical space to our vision for the future. As we have said before, we are only talking about the Lewis Building, not the sanctuary, and there are no preconceived ideas about what we will do with the results of this process.

The assessment depends upon the expertise of New City, but it also depends upon the involvement of the church in several ways in the very near future. So, please participate in every way that you can.

First of all, we ask that you complete by May 13 a space utilization questionnaire accessible through this link:(https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FBC_Test1). Copies are also available in the church office and can be mailed upon request.

Then, on Sunday, May 6, there will be two opportunities for you to ask anything you want about the process and share any thoughts you have – at 9:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall and at 12:15 p.m. in Room 302.

Finally, we invite everyone to participate in a dialogue facilitated by New City on Sunday, May 20, at 5:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. A meal will be included and childcare is offered (if you need childcare, please notify Lynn Lingafelt at llingafelt@fbcraleigh.org by May 14). This gathering will enable us to receive a preliminary report on both the use and condition of our facilities and begin to think about future hopes and dreams.

A facilities assessment may not sound like the most exciting endeavor, but it is a critical part of our planning for future ministry. We invite you to add your voice to the process and to participate prayerfully and with an open heart and mind for how the wonderful space we have been blessed with might be used for God’s work in the future.
