PEACE LAB: DISCOVER GOD’S WAY OF PEACE
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God.” Matthew 5:9
July 29—August 2, 2018
First Baptist Church
C.S. Lewis once said, “God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it is not there. There is no such thing.”
Join us this week of Bible School as we discover together God’s way of peace. We’ll explore four biblical narratives that will point us toward learning how to resolve conflicts, figuring out ways to help other, and following Jesus as compassionate peacemakers. On Monday-Thursday nights, we’ll encounter the stories of Abram and Lot; Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz; Jonathan, Michael, and David; and Mary and Martha. On Sunday evening at our Vespers service, we’ll kick off the week by hearing stories from members of our own church family in their quest for God’s peace.
For this summer’s VBS, we are offering various “electives” in the areas of recreation, music, and crafts. Read through the elective offerings and choose your top three electives. If there are multiple people in your family who are registered on the same form, please write the name by each elective chosen. Electives are open to rising 1st graders through adults.
Preschoolers will experience similar craft, music, and recreation fun, but will do so in self-contained classrooms in the preschool suite from 5:45-8:00 p.m.
The electives are listed below. When you register you will choose your 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice among the electives. See the schedule of electives at the bottom of this page.
Drum Circle: Led by J.D. Rhodes, this group is a great way to connect to music, rhythm, and other people. This drum circle will focus on teaching hand drumming and drum circle rhythms. So feel the rhythm and sign up now!
Instrumental Ensemble: Brush off that instrument in your attic that you haven’t played since high school or bring the instrument you are just learning how to play. Won’t it be fun making music with this group? Led by Beth McCollum.
Change Ringing: Learn the centuries-old art of change ringing on handbells. This activity requires no music reading skills and is great exercise for your brain. If you can count, you can change ring! Join us as we learn the art started long ago by tower bell ringers in Europe. Led by Mary Alice Seals and Kimberly Taylor.
Rock Painting: Join the rock painting fad in this elective as we paint rocks colorfully, share messages of peace on them, and take them into our downtown community for our neighbors to discover. Led by Betty Singletary.
Silk Painting: Explore this simplified form of batik and dye-painting as we use resists and dyes to create images of peace around us and within us. Led by Kent Dickens and Noel Tucker.
Community Art: What can you do with paint chips, magazine pages, and scrapbooking scraps? Come to this elective and find out as we create a lasting image of PEACE to adorn our community space. Led by Jen Foster and Mary Hauser.
Cooking: Join us as we dish out peace, one serving at a time, by making comfort foods that we can freeze and take to folks in our community who could use a tangible, edible offering of God’s love and peace. Led by Nancy Hunter and Mary Powell Rhodes.
Woodworking: Come create a peaceful haven for God’s winged creations as we construct a sturdy bird house to take home and hang in our yards. This elective will involve sanding, hammering, and painting, and $5/participant to help cover the cost of the wood! Led by Diane Ellis.
Creative Movement: Come join us as we discover together what peace looks like and feels like in movement. No prior dance experience is necessary; just come with an open mind ready to find and share peace. Lead by Crystal Bacon and Natalie Willmschen.
Let’s Get Moving! Led by personal fitness trainer Niki Torres (who also happens to be one of our weekday preschool parents), this elective will focus on strength training and balance and is perfect for all fitness levels.
Board Games and Legos: Find inner peace by creating with Legos or working on a puzzle, OR put your conflict resolution skills to the test with friendly board game competition!!
USE YOUR WORDS! Whether spoken aloud or whispered in year heart, written words can be a powerful avenue of peace. As we talk together of peace, we will privately write our thoughts. Poems, prayers, letters, words — they are all an offering of peace to the Lord. Led by Pam Powell.
During the week of Bible school, we will be collecting household items for Caring Connections Ministries, Raleigh’s Christian Women’s Job Corps site. This ministry seeks to work alongside women who are breaking the cycle of poverty, providing mentors who help with job training and educational resources and Bible study. Also provided are life skills guidance in childcare, transportation, housing, and other daily needs. Items we donate will be assembled into kits and presented to women as they reach specific goals in their program. We are collecting: laundry detergent, dish soap, dish towels, toilet scrubbers, all purpose cleaners, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, bath soap, toilet paper, and paper towels. We will also be collecting $10 gift cards to Target and Walmart.
